The Process
- Identifying
the Issue:

Students frequently face challenges finding both an apartment and a compatible roommate. Conflicting habits—like different sleep schedules or cleanliness standards—lead to tension,
while unreliable online profiles and listings make the process stressful and hard to trust.
A study conducted at Boise State University found that 25% of students reported having issues with their roommate, with women reporting more problems than men. Research indicates that poor relationships with roommates are linked to lower satisfaction with school and lower academic performance.
- Our Goals:
The app aims to simplify and improve the roommate search through smart matching based on shared habits, interests, and values. It combines apartment and roommate searches, letting users specify their needs to find the right fit. Inspired by dating apps, the experience is designed to be fun, easy, and focused on the person rather than just the apartment. To help users make informed and confident choices, the app includes verified profiles, mutual friends, and real apartment photos.

- Research

After realizing how common and important this issue is, we began looking into existing apps that addressed it. Since we couldn’t find anything that directly tackled roommate compatibility, we turned to dating apps and apartment-finding platforms for inspiration — aiming to combine the two into a new kind of solution.

To make the logo, we took the letter "R" from the typeface "Kaio" used in the app and turned its negative space into a keyhole. The keyhole represents a doorway, showing access and trust, and also connects directly to the idea of apartments and roommates. The final logo is simple and bold, showing the idea of unlocking the perfect roommate.

Different Features

Know your
compatibility
at a glance.
Save profiles for future consideration
Get insights from people you trust.

When a user taps on a match’s profile, they see a brief animation showing their compatibility and shared values. This helps them quickly understand what they have in common. Below that, the match’s personal interests are displayed, giving a fuller picture of who they are. This intro makes the matching experience more informative and enjoyable.
Instead of going through a long onboarding process at the start, the user answers a few basic questions upfront. Then, short pop-up questions appear throughout the app, helping it learn more about the user gradually — without it feeling like a lengthy questionnaire.

Additional Designs
We created a landing page for Roomatch to introduce the app, highlight its value and features, and drive user sign-ups.

We also designed an App Store page, ensuring the concept was communicated clearly and engagingly.
