VOW
Ux/UI Design
- Project Overview
Inspired by the Jewish Orthodox matchmaking system, this app creates a deeper dating experience based on values, worldview, and personality.
Users connect through games that spark meaningful conversation, gradually revealing personal details and, only at the end, a photo. The process lets personality and values come first, with appearance revealed only at the end.

The Process
- Identifying
the Issue:

Modern dating often prioritizes the wrong things. Most apps are built around photos and quick swipes, encouraging shallow judgments instead of real connection. This focus on appearance makes it harder to reach the deeper conversations—about values, worldview, and personality—that actually determine long-term compatibility. People are left chasing surface impressions while missing the chance to discover
what truly matters.
- Our Goals:
Inspired by the Jewish Orthodox matchmaking system, we aim to refocus dating on what really matters—values, worldview, and personality. Physical attraction still has its place, but our goal is to build connections on a stronger, lasting foundation.

- Research

My research began after hearing from many people that dating in the modern day has become increasingly difficult and superficial. This led me to think about how traditional religious matchmaking, where the focus is on shared values, intentions, and long-term compatibility could be combined with the accessibility and openness of modern dating apps. To explore this idea, I spoke with matchmakers as well as individuals currently dating, learning about their challenges, preferences, and what they feel is missing from existing platforms. These insights helped me shape the foundation of my app, which aims to create more meaningful connections by prioritizing core values over appearances.
The Design System

- Typography:

Since this app doesn’t rely on user photos like most dating platforms, typography became the visual foundation of the design. To reflect the app’s unique process where personal details are gradually revealed, I partially covered the open spaces inside certain letters. This transforms the letters into abstract shapes, creating both visual intrigue and symbolic meaning. Just as the app hides some information at first and reveals it over time, the typography conceals and then suggests what lies beneath.

- Color Palette:

- Logo:

The logo continues the same typographic approach used throughout the app—letters with closed counters, creating bold and abstract shapes that hint at information being partially concealed.
The name Vow was chosen to signal the app’s focus on commitment and sincerity. It's meant for people seeking meaningful, serious relationships rather than casual encounters. Together, the visual style and the name reinforce the idea of depth, trust, and intentional connection.

The Flow

Onboarding:

The app learns about the user through a playful, interactive onboarding instead of a boring questionnaire. It feels like a game, keeping things light and fun while gathering insights into the user’s values and preferences.
Browse Matches:

After onboarding, users reach the Browsing Matches screen, showing potential matches with a compatibility score, shared values, and personal photos uploaded by each match that best represent who they are.

Getting to Know Each Other:

When two users match, they begin a guided process designed to help them gradually get to know one another in a meaningful way. Each stage includes short interactive games or thoughtful prompts that encourage honest conversation and reflection. As they move forward, they unlock more messaging time, allowing their conversations to deepen naturally and with intention.
